FAQ's

What should I look for in an electrolyte?

Salt first, no sugar. Many electrolytes list dextrose as the first ingredient, and the more sugar a product has, the less room there is for actual electrolytes. Research from Kentucky Equine Research found added sugar does not improve electrolyte absorption. Salt is the first ingredient in Four Sixes Electrolyte Recover Powder, with at least 6.5 g of sodium and 13 g of chloride per scoop and no added sugar.

How do I know if my horse needs electrolytes?

If your horse sweats past the saddle pad, it is time. Horses lose more electrolytes in sweat than people do, and replacing them helps the body return to normal fluid balance. Common times to use it:
✓ Hot or humid weather
✓ Moderate to intense work or full-day work
✓ Hauling and long-distance travel
✓ During or after loose manure
✓ Poor drinkers

Will electrolytes help my horse drink more?

Yes. Salt stimulates thirst, so a balanced electrolyte gets horses drinking more water. That makes it useful for poor drinkers any time of year, even in cold weather.

Should I use the Four Sixes Electrolyte Recover powder or the Four Sixes Electrolyte Paste?

Both have the same formula. The powder is for daily top-dressing on feed. The paste is for on the go, like hauling, shows, or a long day away from the barn. Many owners use the powder daily and keep paste in the trailer.

Why does it contain B vitamins?

B vitamins help the body turn feed into energy. Healthy horses make some B vitamins in the hindgut, but hard-working horses often need more than the gut can keep up with. They are water soluble, so anything the body does not use passes out in the urine.

Are B vitamins safe?

Yes. B vitamins are water soluble, meaning dietary levels not needed by the body will be excreted in the urine, eliminating concerns about toxicity. Supplementing with B vitamins is especially important for hard-working horses.

How much of the tube do I use?

Give half to one tube, 30 to 60 mL, by mouth once or twice a day as needed after hard work, heavy sweating, or travel. Always offer clean water afterward. Choose the 3 Pack or the 12 Pack to keep the trailer stocked.
